We are often asked: how heavy should my cue be? Should I try out a range of different sizes? Cue length and size is not as complicated as many believe. We recommend a cue length between 57” to 58” for most players and many players of all heights agree on this length. For players taller than 6’4” or those who just enjoy a longer cue, we recommend considering a cue with an extension piece. These removable pieces either screw in or slide on to the butt of a cue and range from 3 inches to 12 inches giving you extra room to grip.
If you are shorter than 5’5” you may find comfort in a shorter cue between 48 inches to 54 inches. Shorter cues and length-adjustable cues are also great for children or if there are tight spaces around your table.
What About Weight?
Cue weight is a personal preference. Pool, snooker and billiard cues range from 17 ounces to 21 ounces, and we recommend a cue between 17 to 19 ounces for snooker and standard English and Australian pool playing. A heavier cue (between 20-21 ounces) is often recommended for American Pool as the balls and table are bigger. A lot of people think a heavier cue is better and assume that you get more power when breaking and playing. However, a heavier pool stick won’t glide as smooth, and it can be trickier to be more refined with your shots. Considering physics and the persistence effect (inertia), a heavier cue is going to increase the effect of any errors made than a more responsive lighter cue. You will have more control with a cue weighted between 17 to 18 ounces.
Still unsure of how weight may affect a cue? Why not try a weight adjustable cue like the WAC Soft Grip Ash Cue or the Grafex Graphite Cue range?
